Eggroll Lumpia Factory

by Maricar on February 27th, 2007

Since I started this series called Filipino Eats - Worldwide, it seems that Filipino restaurants have been in the news more often (or maybe I’m just more aware?).

This latest review is of the Eggroll Lumpia Factory, a restaurant in Chandler, Arizona. Howard Seftel, writing for the Arizona Republic, describes it thus:

Behind the counter sit eight steaming chafing trays (the lineup changes daily), the contents of which get spooned into three sizes of plastic foam cups ($3.95, $4.95 and $6.95). Unless you were born in Manila, your first thought when you peer at the food will be, “What’s that?”

Fortunately, the affable proprietor, Gene Avendanio, is happy to give you a guided tour.

This is hard-core ethnic fare, with unfamiliar ingredients, flavors and names. But different can be fun and tasty, and with the $3.95 containers, experimentation won’t bust any budgets.

Find the Factory here:

2986 N. Alma School Road (southwest corner at Elliot Road), Chandler, Arizona; Phone: (480) 855-6756

Note: The series called Filipino Eats - Worldwide is our attempt to source out great restaurants all over the world. If you know of any, send us an email at maricar-at-b5media-dot-com.

Lumpia always sells here in the states!

At office pot luck parties, how many of you Pilipino folks(including me) have been asked(often?)by your caucasian officemates to bring in “Lumpia”(egg roll or shanghai)for the party?

After the Northridge earthquake in 94 here in So. California, My caucasian handyman neighbor volunteered to re-install a new water heater for my house which was damaged by the temblor. After the work, which I believe would’ve cost me around $200-400, I asked him how can I payback his good deed? His reply was; “Does your wife still make those killer egg rolls?”.(he meant the lumpiang shanghai)So I brough hime 200 pieces of the deep fried lumpia with sauce and a case of San Miguel imported beer which made him really happy.

I keep my lumpia a secret from my officemates. It’s too good! hahaha!

Seriously, lumpia is really one of the best-kept secrets of Filipino cuisine.

Wow, sarap naman ng bayad mo sa neighbor mo. With San Miguel beer pa! :)

Masarap nga ang lumpia. I now know freshly-made lumpia wrapper is the best. Should you come back to LB, maybe you get yourself some freshly made wrappers in Bayan market :)
