christmas-table-sxc-300px I know that this year, as with the previous years, our Christmas table will be laden with a mix of Filipino and western food. My mother-in-law will serve embutido as part of our Christmas dinner. I will cook some ribs and maja blanca. There will be a pot of rice, of course, jostling elbows with a platter of dinner rolls.

What will be on your Christmas table this year? Will roast turkey make an appearance? Maybe ham? Queso de bola?

Don’t forget to take photos of  your Christmas feast and then share your celebrations with us, as we host the first Carnival of Filipino Christmas Tables. You can share your Christmas Eve feast or the lunch/dinner on Christmas Day. Once your post is up on your blog, send me the link via email (maricar-at-b5media-dot-com). I will round up the carnival entries on Saturday, December 27, 2008 Sunday, December 28, 2008.

Have fun this Christmas and enjoy your feast with your loved ones!

Every year around Christmas, Filipinos all over the world send balikbayan boxes to their relatives in the Philippines. Either they send the boxes via door-to-door cargo delivery or send it with someone going home. The infamous balikbayan box takes center stage in the latest video courtesy of impersonation mistress Christine Gambito singing “More Processed Meat” to the tune of “12 Days of Christmas.

What’s in your balikbayan box?

After weeks of anticipating each episode of Survivor Philippines, it seems that I’ve had withdrawal symptoms after the show ended.

JC had a well-deserved win. Majority of you picked him to be the winner too. Out of 255 votes cast, JC got 243 (95%) and Rob had 12 (5%). Having won so many challenges, including 2 getaways and a car, JC had proven that he had what it takes to outwit, outplay and outlast the other castaways. Congratulations again, JC!

The show may be over but Survivor fever has not left the Philippines. Do I hear cries of “Season 2! Season 2!”?

I’m sure we’ll all gather again to watch a new season if it materializes. Meanwhile, here’s the latest articles about some of the castaways:

  • Competitiveness helps taekwondo jin Vern Domingo adjust to Survivor Philippines (source)
  • Survivor JC unfazed by ‘leakage’ controversy (source)
  • Survivor Philippines ends with a bang! (source)
  • Marlon Carmen says his family is proud of what he did in Survivor (source)

And, it’s time for a new poll! Let your voice be heard about Survivor Philippines Season 2!

Philippine Folk Dance: Singkil http://www.filipinasoul.com/2008/12/philippine-folk-dance-singkil/ http://www.filipinasoul.com/2008/12/philippine-folk-dance-singkil/#comments Sat, 13 Dec 2008 09:00:27 +0000 http://www.filipinasoul.com/philippine-folk-dance-singkil/ Post from: Filipina Soul

The Singkil dance is the most difficult of the Philippine traditional dances. It requires skill to navigate the bamboo poles while gracefully dancing with a fan, an umbrella or ones bare hands. The dance is native to the Maguindanao people, and is performed alone by a woman of royal blood who is advertising herself to suitors. With the modernized steps of folk dance companies, singkil now includes an entourage of dancers. Tinikling is nothing compared to Singkil, although both use bamboo poles.

A group of my friends attempted to perform the Singkil and I can’t tell you how many times our feet got caught in the bamboo poles, so instead of showing my version of the dance, here is the Leyte Dance Theatre to mesmerize you with the SINGKIL –

Part two is even more complicated, especially as you watch the dance up close. And yes, feel free to clap your hands!

Before leaving the island of Koh Tarutao on Survivor Philippines, the 8 members of the Jury cast their votes about who they thought deserved the title of Pinoy Sole Survivor.

Jace voted first. Vern was next, and she voted for Rob. She congratulated him, and said that regardless of what the others said about him, she agreed with Marlon that there was something in him that the others haven’t seen. Zita was next to vote, followed by Charisse. Kiko then voted for JC, addin an exclamation point to his vote. Kiko told JC that he made him proud and that he did his best. Though Kiko didn’t agree with JC’s bringing Rob, who was full of illusions and thought that he deserved to win, it wasn’t about Rob but JC. Kaye cast her vote next, then Cris and Marlon.

Paolo said that the Jury had cast their votes, but it was not enough. In 39 days, 15 Tribal Councils and 26 challenges, the Filipino nation had been witnesses to what had happened in the island. Paolo said that the viewers were the 9th member of the Jury. He bid JC, Rob and the Jury goodbye, saying he’ll see them in the Philippines.

Paolo was shown in a helicopter and carrying the urn full of votes. He welcomed the viewers and fans to the studio to watch the live counting of votes. He then presented the Final Two: the hardcourt heart throb JC and the loverboy Rob.

Highlights of the previous episode with the Jury’s statements and questions were shown.

Final Reactions

Paolo asked if Rob and JC if they were not affected by the Jury’s reactions. Rob said that those who are easily affected will be affected, but he understood. Paolo asked for his reaction about the long-standing perception that Rob was soft. Rob asked if it was a soft person who had chosen who would go to the Final Two.

Paolo asked JC about him crying during the last Tribal Council. JC said that he felt that he had no allies in the Jury, and then he was touched by what Kiko had said, that there was someone who believed he had done everything. JC also said that every time Kiko made a decision, he had been consulted.

Paolo then turned to the Jury. Kiko said that the stormy weather, the first during a Tribal Council, only aligned with what was happening in the Council. He said that he stood by his decisions and everything that he said.

Cris explained his comment about Rob kissing both girls and guys, that he was wondering if Rob was gay or not. Rob asked them what they thought. Cris thought that there was a slight chance, pero it’s up to Rob.

Zita was asked why she had shown the mood she did on the Tribal Council. Paolo had only found out what she was saying the night before the live finale. Zita got emotional, saying that despite everything she had done for Naak, she could not imagine that they would vote her off. Paolo asked her if she was now OK, and she said yes.

In the highlights, Rob was portrayed as having a strategy right from the start, to relate well with his fellow castaways to go far in the game. JC was shown as being young, and a follower of his Kuya Kiko. But after experiencing loss and hardship, JC the schoolboy had graduated to become a man with a clear strategy and the ability and luck to win several challenges in a row.

Back in the studio, Paolo asked JC what he would do with the prize money if he won. JC said that he will use most of it to help his parents with their business, because he was still in school and he wanted to give back to them. If Rob won, he said that the money will be a big help toward securing his future.

Win or lose, JC said that there have been a lot of changes in his life because of Survivor Philippines. One of these is being satisfied with whatever is available. Rob said that he had gained direction in his life.

Paolo talked about the Nation’s Vote, a first in the history of the Survivor franchise. The vote of the Filipino viewers would be counted as one and serve to break a tie, should one happen.

The Votes Counted

Paolo brought the urn containing 9 votes out on stage. If anyone received 5 votes, that person would be the winner of Survivor Philippines. The first vote that was counted was the Nation’s Vote… and the results: 93% for JC, 7% for Rob.

The second vote was for Rob (Vern’s vote, with the heart as the letter ‘O’).

The third vote was for JC.

The fourth vote was for Rob. 2 for JC, 2 for Rob.

Before the count continued, Rob’s supporters in Mandaluyong, including their councilman, was shown onscreen. Then JC’s supporters in San Sebastian College, including one of his high school teachers. Rob and JC thanked GMA7 and their supporters.

The counting of the votes was resumed, with officers from GMA up on the stage with Paolo.

The Winner!

The fifth vote was for JC (Kiko’s vote, with the exclamation point!). 3 for JC, 2 for Rob.

The sixth vote was for JC. 4 for JC, 2 for Rob. Only one more for JC to win!

The seventh vote was for JC! JC wins as the first Pinoy Sole Survivor!

Pandemonium reigned onstage as the members of the Jury went to congratulate him, and JC’s fans celebrated.

JC was awarded the P3 million check and a golden pearl, which represented his win as the first Pinoy Sole Survivor. JC’s family and girlfriend were called up on stage.

Paolo also congratulated the runner-up, Rob Sy. He then called all the 18 remaining castaways on stage.

The audience chanted “Season 2! Season 2!”, which made Paolo smile. He encouraged the audience to shout louder because the president of GMA was present.

“Sa muling pagkikita! Malalim na ang gabi!”

Congratulations, JC Tiuseco, the winner of Survivor Philippines and the first Pinoy Sole Survivor!

Episode 64 of Survivor Philippines is the last one before the winner is revealed!

The Final Two castaways, JC and Rob, go to the Tribal Council. Host Paolo Bediones was shown arriving in a speed boat. He called in the members of the Jury – Jace, Kiko, Vern, Marlon, Kaye, Zita, Cris and Charisse.

It seemed fitting that the last night on the island was stormy, with lightning often illuminating the ocean and the Tribal Council.

Day 39 was when the power to vote was transferred from the castaways to the Jury. Paolo said that the Jury members were witnesses to how the two of them had lived on the island. Some of them may have disgruntled feelings against them, and that would be revealed that night. Instead of Paolo, the members of the Jury would ask the questions of Rob and JC.

Rob was asked to give an opening statement for the Jury. Rob said he was thankful for the opportunity to spend time with them on the island. He treasured each moment with them. He also said that, though he wasn’t the best in camp life and in the challenges, he considered his relationship with his fellow castaways was more important than the prize.

JC, in his turn, said he was very thankful for each member of the Jury, because if not for them, he would not be in the top 2. He gave 100% in challenges; he wasn’t very good at camp life but he learned a lot from the others. He said he played fair and he didn’t want anybody to get hurt. Even if he lost, he was happy as long as everybody was safe. JC also said that he was consistent in what he said until the end, and that he was very honest with them.

Kiko

Then it was the Jury’s turn to ask questions as thunder and lightning continued. Kiko first apologized to Rob because of Kiko’s mistake in doubting Rob. Kiko then asked Rob whether his doubt was the only reason that he had given the black pearl. Kiko reminded him that he called Kiko a dictator and that Rob had only been a follower. If that was the case, could he say that Rob’s strategy was what brought him to his position. He told Rob, “You disappointed me, bro”. Kiko also took issue with the way Rob talked in front of the camera, even though he wasn’t like that. Kiko also reminded Rob of how he cursed Kiko, when he could have aired his thoughts in a decent manner. Rob asked, “So, what’s your point?”.  Kiko then said that he thought Rob could win Best Actor in Reality TV award. Rob replied, “Sa iyo na yung award” (it’s yours). Kiko said that he would just give it to Rob.

To JC, Kiko said, “All I can say is I’m proud of you. Wala talaga akong tanong sa iyo, pare. Yun lang talaga. I’m so proud of you, bro. You did well.” A tearful JC could only say, “Thanks, bro”.

Jace

Jace was next. He asked Rob why he walked the way he walked, why he talked that way, and why he always seemed confident and very sure, as if he didn’t just get lucky. Rob defended himself by saying each one had a different strategy, and his strategy took him where he was.

Jace asked JC, “Do you know the word ‘honorable’?”, to which JC nodded yes. Then, “Do you think you’re honorable?” JC nodded again. Then, “Why?”. JC started to answer, “Kasi wala akong…” but Jace cut him off, “I don’t think so. Trinaydor mo ako. (You betrayed me.).” Jace reminded him of their very early alliance, and what JC did affected 4 people, former Jarakays which now composed half of the Jury. These people trusted JC and put their hope in him. [JC looked really stressed at the questioning that was going on.] Jace said that he trusted JC more than his own tribe. Jace explained that he did not have an alliance with Jace’s tribe. His alliance was with Jace and John. He did not finish his explanation, before Jace cut in to ask him if he thought he was deserving. JC just nodded.

Cris

Next, Cris asked an enigmatic question of JC, whether JC thought he (JC) was young or old. JC said he considered himself still young. Cris then accused him of taking all his decisions from others (JC shoook his head at this point.). Cris pointed out that JC was proud of his integrity, but that he had gone back on his word to Zita that he wanted to take her. Cris said that he couldn’t imagine that JC could do that to Zita, and that JC thought he was free of betrayal. JC said that he made no promises to Zita. Cris asked him who he would believe, Zita who had been voted out, or JC who was sitting among the final two.

Cris then turned to Rob, telling him that’s it’s OK to kiss the girls, but why would Rob kiss him too? [Was Cris trying to be funny?]. Cris said he’d wondered who Rob really was? Rob asked if he could talk. Cris said he was the one to say if Rob could talk. Then, without saying anything else, he told Rob it was OK for him to talk [Cris must have been trying to be funny.] Rob defended himself that he had never gone back on his word to Cris. Cris said that he knew that but said that Mommy Zita didn’t.

Kaye

Kaye congratulated the two but said that she had a lot of hard feelings against them, especially Rob. She asked Rob whether he was sincere in his profuse thanks to her for helping him swim to shore on their first day. Rob said his gratitude was real. Kaye also asked him whether it was true he only wanted to be co-Survivor, and if he won the P3 million, he would give it to Zita. Rob said that he never said anything like that. Kaye said that he did say it and thus, he’s a liar; did he then deserve to win? Rob said he deserved to win because he worked hard to get his position. Kaye retorted with, “Ano’ng pinaghirapan?”. Did you really work hard for that, or did the tribe bring you there? Kaye said that she regretted voting for Kiko; she should have voted for Rob instead.

Kaye asked JC why he voted her off despite telling her that he understood why she voted for Kiko. JC said that he felt he could not trust her. Kaye said that JC did not believe what she had told him, and that she should have voted him off from the first. She also said that she still felt bad toward him.

Vern

Vern told JC that he had hurt and disappointed many people, like Jace, who regarded him as a friend and a brother. To Rob, she asked if he thought she was easy to get and was just a toy, an over-the-counter item. Rob said that he respected her highly. Vern reminded him of what happened during the Thai pillow challenge, when Rob put his hand on her breast. She asked him why he had to do it. Rob said that he preferred to challenge her, because it was physically easier than going against the guys. He had apologized to her in the camp, and was thankful that she had understood. Vern said that the two of them were cowards.

Zita

Zita then spoke in Bisaya to Rob, saying that she thought he would fulfill his promises to her. She didn’t realize what a liar he was. He had told her that the two of the, both Bisaya, would be left. Instead, there were still 5 left when he voted for her. Zita said that Rob had told her that, if he had won the Immunity Necklace, he would give it to her. Rob admitted that he said those things to her. Zita then asked him what she had done wrong to him, when she had served them on so many occasions, including doing his laundry for him. Rob replied that he and all the others appreciated everything that Zita had done for them. Zita said that she would have reached the Top 3 if Rob (and JC) had not voted for her. Zita said that Rob was just like politicians who made promises but, after the election, left others, including her, to their own lives. Rob reminded her that it was a game, and that he only played the game as he needed to play it. Zita asked him to tell her why she should give him the title of Sole Survivor and the P3 million. Rob replied that if she gave it to him, he could help her a lot (and thanks). Zita seemed shocked speechless for a moment Rob’s reply. Rob said that he respected Zita’s opinion.

Zita reminded JC that she had picked Alu to stay with them, and if he didn’t think of it when he voted her off. Zita told him that he had a debt of gratitude to her. JC said that she had given the reward, but he did not ask for it. He compared it to choosing Marlon to share in one of his rewards because he wanted everyone to have a chance to get something, even though he knew that Marlon could vote for him. JC said that he did everything, he played well, 100% in every game, and that he worked hard to get where he was.

Charisse

Charisse asked Rob whether he had slept well the previous night, even though he knew he had taken the chance of becoming Sole Survivor from her. She focused on the word “deserving”. She said that it seemed that she had eaten nothing but clams, and it seemed as if she never left the island. Then Rob was there, saying that he was deserving because he was safe and didn’t try hard to win. Rob said that he had only used his brains. Why should he put himself through agony if he knew he was safe? Charisse said that regardless of an alliance, he needed to prove to the televiewers that he deserved the title of Sole Survivor. Rob reminder her that he won the last Immunity Challenge. Charisse said that even she had given her all.

Charisse told JC that he knew he could trust her not to put him in jeopardy. She asked JC whether he would have agreed to make an alliance with her to be in the Final Two if she had gotten to him first (before Rob). JC said that he would have agreed. Charisse then said that JC’s decisions were based on timeline, on who got to him first, even if it was Marlon. JC said that he would keep his promise to anybody, as long as that person didn’t do anything bad to him. Charisse said that she was disappointed in his answer, and that he needed to look at the bigger picture.

Marlon

Marlon was last to ask his questions. He said that he had not made up his mind about who to pick to win. Marlon asked JC whether there was a promise that he did not fulfill. JC said yes, his promise to Jace. Marlon asked about Nanay Zita. JC answered that he did not make a promise to her. Marlon told JC that there was a promise to Naak to bring the entire tribe to the final. So why did JC talk to Charisse instead of Zita? Didn’t that mean he was afraid of Zita or that he had betrayed her? JC replied that he could not trust Zita, because she changed her mind often. Marlon asked him how he could say that, if he knew who had betrayed Naak. JC said that he knew it was Cris and Kaye.

Marlon asked Rob how much Rob could trust him in the game. Rob said that he could trust Marlon because of how he was trustworthy toward Charisse. Marlon asked if he should pick Rob because Marlon had lost their bet that Rob would be in the Top Two. Rob said that the decision was Marlon’s, including how they had strategized to survive. Marlon asked Rob what his strategy was. Rob replied that it was balance. Marlon said that he would vote for Rob if Rob simply said that he had relied on JC. Rob said that he did not rely on JC alone, but on all of them. Rob said that he did not use his physical strength, but his mental ability. Marlon asked whether Rob had betrayed anyone in Naak. Rob said that he and JC had talked with another tribemate simply to reach their objective.

In their final statements, Rob said that he respected the Jury’s opinions. He had reached the Final Two because of balance in the game, camp life and his relationships with the other castaways. The decision was in their hands and hearts and he would respect whatever decision they would make. JC simply thanked the Jury and said, until the end, he had learned a lot from them. Rob shook JC’s hand before the Jury’s voting began.

The fate of the Final Two castaways on Survivor Philippines is now in the hands of the 8-member Jury.

In the last episode before the live finale on December 12, 2008, JC and Rob will each get a last chance to convince the Jury that he deserves to be the first Pinoy Sole Survivor.

How will the Jury vote?

Based on what I have seen on the 63 episodes, here’s who I predict the Jury members will choose to be the winner of Survivor Philippines, and why:

  • Jace – Jace believed that he had a strong alliance with JC, even after the merger of Naak and Jarakay. JC helping to vote him off the island came as a surprise to him. Jace may not have gotten over that yet. Jace will pick Rob to win.

  • Kiko – Kiko hasn’t fully explained why he gave the black pearl to Rob. Though Rob didn’t betray him, Kiko may have had other reasons for choosing Rob. In his anger, Rob had said things about Kiko that the latter did not like. On the other hand, Kiko had never had anything against JC, and so will vote for him to win.
  • Vern – As a fair and intense competitor herself, Vern values these qualities in JC and thus will pick him as the one who deserves to win. Vern’s vote goes to JC.
  • Marlon – JC was fair even to Marlon. When he won rewards, JC gave the others the chance to share in the prize. JC picked Marlon as one of those to receive the full 30-second videos from their loved ones. Marlon’s vote goes to JC.
  • Kaye – JC chose Kaye as one of the group that went with him to the resort. JC has been fairly consistent with his decisions. Kaye’s vote goes to JC.
  • Zita – Though JC didn’t fulfill a promise he made to Zita, it seemed that all was forgiven between them. Rob showed more warmth toward her, hugging her on a number of occasions, and even going so far as to say he would be happy to give her the prize. I believe that Zita felt more betrayed by Rob than by JC. Zita will vote for JC.
  • Cris – Cris never liked what he perceived as Rob’s clinging on to JC to get far in the game. He was very vocal about Rob meeting challenges half-heartedly, seemingly sure in his position as long as JC was doing well. Another vote for JC.
  • Charisse – JC was the one who approached Charisse to forge one last alliance. He only made one promise to Charisse, to get her in the Final Three, and he fulfilled that promise to her. For taking her farther than she had hoped she would go, Charisse will vote for JC.

Final tally: 7 votes for JC, 1 vote for Rob.

My prediction for the winner of Survivor Philippines is therefore JC Tiuseco. Based on our readers’ poll, it seems that an overwhelming majority of you pick JC too!

We’ll find out if my Jury predictions are right, in just a few hours!

We are nearing the finale of  Survivor Philippines! Out of the original 18 castaways, only two, bosom buddies JC and Rob, are left.

Farewell to Camp Chalam

Day 39 came. JC and Rob relaxed on their last day on the island. They got their treemail, which seemed to indicate that the end would come for the camp in the form of fire. JC and Rob cleaned up their home for 39 days, before they took their torches and set fire to it. They also burned the Chalam flag.

JC said that the memories of their days on the island with the other castaways went through his mind as they watched the camp burn down. He wished that everything he had learned would still be with him when he went back to Manila and that he would become a better person because of them.

Last Messages

Rob and JC then went to a place high up on the island to reminisce about their fellow castaways. At various stations on the way, they found the castoffs’ extinguished torches, in the order of their departure from the island. They put a flower garland on each torch and left a message for those who had spent time on the island with them. Clips of each castaway were shown in between the messages. As they went from torch to torch, their messages got more personal and emotional. Gratitude, hopes of continuing friendship, and good wishes were given to the castoffs.

Here are parts of their final messages to their former tribe mates:

  • Marlon – (JC) Kahit ano pa man, nakita ko yung good side sa iyo at nire-respeto kita.
Sana kung ano man yung naging desisyon namin, it’s only a part of the game.
We dearly love you. We do, we do, we do. We love you.

At the end of their salute to the other castaways, JC and Rob reached the top of the summit where they enjoyed their last sunset on the island. Rob appreciated the chance to give a message to the others and thank each of them. JC said he and Rob would not have been in the Final Two if it were not for the other castaways, and that he was thankful for it.

Rob and JC released purple hot-air balloons into the air. JC acknowledged that the end of the game had come, and he had done everything. The decision at the Tribal Council was now out of his hands. Rob was thankful for the mutual trust that he and JC had for each other.

Work & Pleasure Let’s start something new!

"FS Feedback" is a new series at Filipina Soul to give our readers (that’s you) a chance to voice their thoughts on a particular topic or issue. To spearhead this series, I’m giving away a Christmas bonus!

A random drawing will give you a chance to win your choice of a $20 gift card to Amazon or Paypal account, or an equivalent amount in Philippine peso of your choice of Phone cards.

So, our first Filipina Soul Feedback question:

What was your most memorable Christmas celebration?

We love to hear from you!

As to the contest, make sure you read the rules after the cut.

  • Enter your choice in the comments below. You MUST provide an appropriate answer to be eligible for the drawing.
  • You can enter as many times as you want, BUT your comments must not be repeats! I will delete repeated comments.
  • It’s open to residents of the US, Canada and the Philippines only.
  • Contest ends 11:59 midnight EST on December 19, 2008 (Sunday).
  • One (1) winner will be randomly chosen and announced via blog and email the week after.
  • If a winner does not reply within 3 days, he/she forfeits her winnings and an alternate entry will be chosen.
  • REMINDER #1 : In previous contests, I have had several winners forfeited for failure to reply to my emails.  Please make sure your settings don’t put my email into the junk folder, otherwise you’ll have no idea you won. Better yet, please check this blog for the winners’ list after the contest ends. Best bet, come back often and stay a reader!
  • REMINDER #2: Please answer the question above. I will not accept answers like "I want this" or "Thanks".
