Hand-foot-mouth, my foot!

by Grace on October 26th, 2006

It’s chaos in my household right now.
My daughter’s been cranky, clinky and sick. She’s had colds since last week, fever and sore throat since Tuesday, and no appetite at all. On top of that when I took her to the pedia, she was given the flu shot.
A happy household we’re not.

What caught me off guard is my baby was diagnosed with hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD). No, it’s NOT the foot-and-mouth disease (found in cattle).

The pediatrician says it’s rather common in infants and young children, in season through summer and fall, and moderately contagious. It’s called that because painful sores develop in the roof of the mouth, the palm of the hands and sole of the foot. Right now, she only has mouth sores but we’re watching her closely. Poor baby. I don’t even know how she got it; my guess is from her daycare but none of the other kids have been really sick too.

But what’s weird, Maricar told me her kids had it too, a week before my baby did.

Oh well, just venting. Hopefully I’ll be back to my happy blogging days when this is over.

If you wanna know more about hand-foot-mouth disease, here is a fact sheet from the Centers of Disease Prevention.

It must be more contagious than I thought! My kids had it last week, all three of them: 3, 6 and 9 yrs old. I had to take three days off from work to stay home with them. The little one had it first. He got the dots on his hand-foot-and-mouth. Some kids at his day care got it too.

Daniel, sorry to hear that. Three kids, that’s tough. my daughter’s pedia said we might catch it too. it has three weeks transmission, which means from this week til thanksgiving is when it’s still contagious. kainis ano? since it’s a virus just have it run it’s course. but the baby’s suffering so much she can’t eat well. so there’s really nothing we can do… prayer always works.

[…] That week, our daughter came down with hand-foot-mouth disease and diarrhea caused by the antibiotics she was taking for ear infections and HFM. Talk about a cranky child. She cried herself to sleep at every plane we boarded, and I can only pray and thank God the other passengers were understanding. Still, I got that look once in a while. […]
