Higher Pay for Filipino Doctors, Nurses and Teachers

Some good news is coming up for Filipino teachers, doctors and nurses.

MALACAÑANG is planning to spend an average of P43 billion a year in the next four years to boost the salary scale of government doctors, nurses and teachers in a bid to stem the exodus of these professionals to more lucrative jobs abroad…

(Budget Secretary Rolando) Andaya said the government’s goal was to give private-grade salaries to government doctors, nurses and teachers to at least narrow the gap and encourage them to continue serving in government. He noted that with the hard economic times, more Filipinos are depending on public hospitals and public schools for their basic needs.

It’s no secret that the main reason trained professionals are leaving the Philippines is the opportunity for financial security in other countries. So this move by the Philippine government will hopefully encourage more of these professionals to stay in the country, and not have to leave their families behind.

It’s good news for the public hospitals who depend on the government for funds, yet continue to serve the underprivileged. Likewise for the public schools, and the children who are being trained in them.

The Philippines needs to retain its skilled workers and professionals in order to maintain (and improve) the Filipino’s quality of life. This plan is one step toward that goal. Good for Arroyo to push through with this!

Filipinos who claim they have so much pride and belief in the family system should make the sacrifice and stay in the Philippines to assist in improving their economy. The ones migrate to the USA are only interested in the money or gaining permanent residency. Once in the USA they should “do as Americans do” they should leave their customs in the Philippines. Otherwise go home — now

this really is in response to none_of_your_business’ post.. pride & belief in the family system has nothing to do with staying in the philippines or not. you must be talking about “nationalism”. true, the reason most doctors are migrating is for bigger pay. you can’t blame them if they want to support their loved ones financially. honestly, do you have any idea how much doctors (new graduates) are getting paid? the government should contemplate on this issue.
