Illegal cable connections
This is reminiscent of the ancient times (back in the ’80s that is) when a neighbor would attach an antennae cable to another house to get a reception. At least that wasn’t illegal back then. Not that I know of.
Now there’s an illegal way of getting cable, by splitting a cable and attaching the other end to another TV… in another house… or worse in a whole neighborhood.
Philippine Cable Television Association President Allan Dungao says that the cable industry is losing P5 Billion a year to illegal cable subscribers.
Most of the time, the splitting is used for multiple TV sets at home, but Dungao said some subscribers reconnect their illegal cables to their neighbors’ houses. The neighbors then share the cost of the actual subscription.
Some subscribers redistribute their subscription to a wider area, sometimes an entire village or neighborhood, and charge for the service like a cable operator.
Director General Adrian Cristobal of the Intellectual Property Office (IPOPHIL) says his office will look into it in detail.

This is really funny in a way. Back when I was in Manila, it was very common to hear your neighbor yell “TUBEEEEG!” when the laundry lady is busy doing her wash with water gushing from the faucet on your side of the street. Illegal water connection siphoned from the main water pipe deprives the whole neighborhood with sufficient water pressure needed for the shower or other washing needs, hence the big bucket of water and tabo in the bathroom. There is also the rampant illegal connection from power lines! Easily but dangerously accessible are electrical power source running above ground on the streets of Manila. Climb up the lamp post and clamp or splice your wire onto the main power source line and voila! Mahjong and pang-ginggi all night long! Endless free power source courtesy of Meralco! Pilipino ingenuity at it’s best! I wonder if illegal cable connection tracking systems can help the cable company disconnect cable patrons with illegally connected splicers on them? I’m not going to bet on that one.

when i was in pinas last month, i saw ads on TV that says illegal cable connections is a crime. but there are still lots of illegal connections. why does everybody in pinas wants to have cable? does it mean to say the local TV programs are not that good and does not have quality? hmmmmmmm!!!

yeah i guess we can say that filipinos are creative. ha!
i do wonder why we’re so good at getting around the system. i’m sure economics has something to do with this, but we believe that we can get away with such, and for the most part we do. one of the things we’re not proud of as filipinos.

concerned citizen,
the writers of this blog are not authorities when it comes to jumpers. This is just a blog talking about cable jumpers (if that’s the right term).
