Luna, Amorsolo and Zobel Exhibit in San Francisco

U.S.-based admirers of Filipino art will get a chance to view the works of three great Filipino painters: Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo and Fernando Zobel.
“Pioneers of Philippine Art: Luna, Amorsolo, Zobel,” a traveling version of the new Ayala Museum’s inaugural exhibit, opens at the Hambrecht Gallery of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco (AAMSF) from October 20 to January 7, 2007. Curated by Baker, the exhibit showcases 18 paintings by Luna, some 40 by Amorsolo and more than 50 by Zobel. The exhibit includes notably iconoclastic and highly revealing pieces, such as forays into social realism by Luna, a painting of an American lady in Filipiniana costume by Amorsolo and realistic portrait of Jose McMicking in the grand academic manner by Zobel.
The painting above is an untitled oil-on-canvas piece by Amorsolo (1920). I wish I lived closer to San Francisco to see this and the other works in person. If you are in the area, make sure you stop by to see the exhibit.

i saw the three masterpieces that will be displayign their works at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum. I am so impressed with the “Palay Maiden”, 1920 by Fernando Amorsolo (1892-1972) on oil on canvas and “Woman with Manton” ca. 1880s by Juan Luna (1857-1899) oil on canvass. and the 3rd one “Primavera Jucar II by Fernando Zobel (1924-1984) oil on canvass. One of the greatest work I truly advire is that of Amorsolo, which is hanging on display at the Malacanang Palace, on top of the grand staircase thru the gallery hall. I think it is entitled “Spolarium”. There is also another painting that I have seen made by Amorsolo, which was sold by Senor Da Silva to the Baretto family. This was sold 1979 and the price of that sale is just peanuts, compared to the value of the painting now.

Thanks for the art info. I will be in SFO with my MC riding group on the weekemd of Nov. 10-12 to participate in the mayor’s parade for the vets. We will be riding as honor guards for the Pilipino vets based here in the westcoast. I will have to find time to see the Amorsolo, Luna and Zobel exhibit. I think this is a rare opportunity for Pinoys overseas to see the works of the Pinoy masters. I went to art school with the grandson of Amorsolo, Fernando (Pocholo) Amorsolo III. I wonder how’s he doing now?

Hi Mel,
The “Spoliarium” is actually by Luna, not Amorsolo. I was able to see this great work in the National Museum in Manila in 1999. If it is in Malacanang now, I hope they’re keeping it well-preserved.

Noypetes again,
Sorry, but I have no idea how Pocholo Amorsolo is doing now. I’ll let you know if he ever drops by our blog. ;)

hey Daniel, if you happen to go there, would you ask if they’re taking the exhibits elsewhere? Particularly in the east coast. Thanks!

Maricar, yes, if I go I’ll let you know how it went.
Grace, I’ll certainly try!
