My U.P. at L.B.
UP Los Banos will always hold a magical place in my heart. It was where I grew up, and schooled from elementary to the graduate level. Most of everyone I hold dear still live in this university town. So my last day of vacation was spent strolling the campus and reminiscing of simpler days gone by.

The UPLB Carabao plaza. Can you almost smell the freshness of this mountainside campus? Stately palm trees and hundred year-old acacia trees still dot the landscape and bring a sense of permanence.
Even a felled acacia such as pictured below has found its life again. A by-product of typhoon Milenyo, this tree serves as a tribute to how beautifully Los Banos copes with tragedies.

*heart* I just love this place. Some things never change.
But wait… what IS that?!

At first I thought that THING was a meteor-gone-falling on the campus.. or was there an Olympic held here and that was the torch?! ARRRGH.
Take a closer look…

Please. Someone explain what this is doing here in UPLB? For the life of me…
*sigh* Some things have changed. *sigh, sigh*
(Part of a mini-series, “My Journey Home ” chronicles this balikbayan’s return after 7 long years.)

Didn’t you notice that even the carabaos are incongruous? They are older than me (67); they were already there when I came to UPLB in 1959. This is the 21st century, for crying out loud. If they do belong here in this campus (I live not far from there), that explains why we are a backward country: we never left the carabao mentality. In any case, that other incongruous thing is supposed to be a torch representing knowledge (as in education), the idea of alumni headed by Dr Fernando Bernardo; I’m sure it was his idea. Did you know that Dr Bernardo ‘can’t be bothered’ to use the computer, even just to type into it? I know because I edited one of his books, the one about management (!). Some things don’t change.
