Filipina Soul

Of Changing Seasons and Comfort Zones

by Gloria Gamat on February 1st, 2006

Who said we do not have four seasons in the Philippines? The photo above (taken an hour earlier) is the parking lot of the building where I work. To me it certainly looks like fall and spring at the same time. You have to look close enough and notice that new green leaves are sprouting out of the branches before the brown fallen ones even made it to the sweepers.

One time I remember my foreign friends discussing that maybe the reason why Filipinos are always smiling because the sun is always there. (I also remember them noting that the sun here doesn’t set, it drops!) I guess it is true that we generally have a sunshiny attitude even at the worst of times.

Well I have another theory too: Since the “changing of the seasons” here are so sudden, they’re almost on top of the other in succession; just maybe that is the reason why before most us can stew on one thought for a tough decision, some factor makes us turn around immediately, the complete 180 degrees, before we can get into the heart of the matter.

Okay, I can be speaking for myself here. I have an eight to five regular job but I practically live a life of hand-to-mouth existence (financially speaking). Time and again I have thought of seeking that greener pasture but I’ve always come up with alibis. Every time I thread on such thoughts, something just holds me back. That something has always prevented me from taking that one faithful step. That one faithful step of leaving my comfort zone: (look at the photos), that is my comfort zone. Figuratively. I’m too scared to take risks and leave everything familiar and comfortable. If I think like this, I wonder how the greater Filipino population (who thrives on less than 2$ a day) think? Are they comfortable? May be they are.

Actually, I’m seeking that greener pasture but it doesn’t have to be too far away. Who nows, may be I don’t even have to move? Let’s see..I’ll let you all know. :-D

Believe me: I did have a point. I’m just not sure if I got to it.
