Philippines’ best universities
Wanna know how our universities fare against others in the world?
Globally the University of the Philippines is ranked at 299.
- De La Salle 392nd
- Ateneo de Manila 484th
- University of Santo Tomas 500th
These according to the Times Higher Education Supplement-Quacquarelli Symonds (THES-QS) World University Rankings which ranks universities across the globe in yearly surveys that began in 2004.
Among Asian countries, UP is found at 47th. Our standing is considerable, given that our university systems have to deal with increasing budget cuts and the exodus of so many professors and teachers abroad.
What does it mean to be among the top universities?
For one, the rankings help students decide where to go, what kind of educational opportunities await them at their chosen schools. It also should provide incentive for flailing universities to do better.
Michael Tan of the Inquirer analyzed the rankings and the implications for our education system:
First, you don’t need to be a rich country to have good universities. Indonesia, a country less developed than the Philippines, is an example. It had three universities, all state-run, beating us in rankings: University of Indonesia (250th), Bandung Institute of Technology (258th) and University of Gadja Mada (270th).
Second, the other countries seem to recognize that excellence in education must be spread out throughout the country. The three Indonesian universities I just named are all on the island of Java, but at least they’re found not just in the capital, Jakarta, but also in Bandung and Yogyakarta.
Third, the state needs to invest in universities. The THES list is clear in showing that, with the exception of the United States and the Philippines, the leading universities in every country are state-owned. Sure, UP is the leader in the Philippines, but in other countries, several state universities – not just one — made it to the THES list.
Hopefully, being among the top 500 gives us something to be proud of as well as a lot to strive for.

very proud of the universities in the phils. in par with other universities in the world, especially the ivy league school in the US. University of Santo Thomas, our Pontifical University is older than Harvard University of the U.S.,and is also rated one of the best. too bad, i earned my degree in the seminary and Adamson University under the Vincentian Fathers.

DLSU has always produced top quality in terms of education, sports, its alumni, etc. We just don’t go about shouting it like uncultured creatures…like in other schools…

here we go now… :-) the classic rumbles among universities, hehehe… every graduate is fiercely loyal to his alma mater, but that’s expected. ang weird naman siguro tingnan kung graduate ka ng UP tapos, cheering squad ka ng ibang universities ano? hehehe.

We wish that the government should put more budget to UP because we are falling apart from the list. In time, we could be totally eradicated from the list because our government cant see the significance of UP to the country’s mark in tertiary education in the world…

What can I say but….no matter how good of our own alma matter is, i believe it would still depends on YOU, on US,of course, there is something to be proud of, specially when ur school belongs to the top, or to the so-called “elite”.But remember, once we leave school, most of us know that it is not as much a matter of college degrees from these universities that counts, in the real world outside of academics, something more than these are required….learning is beyond classroom, beyond school–beyond any elite universities.Instead search one’s self or rather ask one’s self, if there is something to be proud on you, then you should also be proud of where you belong or where you came from.

You are so right. I’ll never forget what one professor told me - having the right university, diploma or honor only matters in the first five years after college. After that, it’s more about experience and skills.
I’ll be always grateful for the training i got from college, and I thank them (and my parents) for that opportunity. But I know I can’t forever where my school on my sleeves, so to look beyond school for learning is what matters in our career.
Thanks for sharing that profound insight.
More power to all of our career.

for UP, until now, i jst dnt understand and i can’t even get why they imposed tuition fee/tuition fee hike, goodness…UP is a government institution….and it suppose to be a school for those who has the brain but no bread
(i mean…poor but has the intellectual capability)from the public school specially in provinces, but look…it seems go to the other way….the tuition fee is like (or even higher) of the other private schools, students are now mostly belong to elite (common you guys, there is ateneo or lasalle for them),UP is supposedly for the masses, the pride of the poor but deserving…..geez!those days are gone…

i guess the ’stereotype’ that DLSU only caters to students who are “rich, brainless brats” is definitely proven wrong by this survey…
FYI: almost half of my blockmates back in college (of course in DLSU) are under full scholarship, coming from not so rich families… not so rich is actually an understatement… (imagine my classmates’ dad is an ordinary soldier - not those w/ the titles of general or major, mind you…)
so please enough with the comments like: - DLSU over ADMU?!?!?!?!?! AND - But the only question is DLSU over AdMU? That is highly unlikely!??!!
if you’ve got questions on how the survey was done please visit this site: http://www.topuniversities.com/worlduniversityrankings/2006/faqs/

by the way, im not trying to start a fight… ok? =) =D
im just making a point…
enough with being close-minded and lets face the real issue here: how the hell can our ‘top universities’ rank higher???!!!
im definitely not contented with a rank of 299….. are you???!!!
February 9th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
louize… that’s an eye opener for me about DLSU. I guess that is a stereotype I’ve applied to de la salle that it’s only for the rich. Thanks for clarifying that. It’s good to know there are a lot of DLSU scholars because I think the school is one of the best in the country, and rightly so should be open to more deserving students even when they don’t have the money.

aGnioN, I graduated from UP Los Banos, and I remember my first two years we were almost free. But by the time my fourth sibling got into college the socialized tuition fee kicked in and almost killed my parents’ budget. four children in college and still they considered us middle class enough to pay more than I thought we should. i haven’t been to Los Banos in a while so I don’t know the current mood but it’s too bad if what you’re telling is true.

thanks Cris, for promoting USC. the visayan and mindanao universities don’t get as much exposure as those in Manila/Luzon but you do have top caliber schools too.
Any more universities in Visayas and Mindanao we should take note of?

excerpts from “The THES-QS explains university rankings, addresses issues”
The actual scores of the Philippine universities reveal a lot more than the overall rankings. The Ateneo de Manila University was the top-ranked Philippine university in the Recruiter Review, International Faculty, and International Students.
the Recruiter Review (38 percentage points against 32 and 31 of the other universities), International Faculty (7 percentage points against 6 of UP, 4 of UST, and 1 of DLSU), and International Students (6 percentage points against 1 of the other universities). The highest rank in recruiter review means that from the point of view of the world outside, Ateneo graduates are the most sought after in terms of employment. The top rank in internationalization comes as no surprise, considering that Ateneo has been a pioneer in providing students with a global perspective through its Junior Term Abroad in 39 institutions in 11 countries (Australia, China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, France, Spain, Germany, Norway, and the USA,), and its China and Europe study tours.

Haha…nasa AHS ako ngaun at pupunta nang UP Diliman next year. Ito lang masasabi ko. DLSU is the best school to supplement the needs of “challenged” students. It is easy to get to De La Salle- Manila. Failing students of Ateneo High got into La-Salle but rejected by both UP and Ateneo. So what does this mean for you guys out there?
