ProBlogging as an Alternative Career for Pinoys

Several weeks ago, an acquaintance asked my email group about possible money-making gigs that she can do as an at-home mom. I mentioned the possibility of blogging professionally, and got private emails from several others who wanted to know more. Some of them admitted they didn’t even think that money could be earned through blogging. One said that she’s been blogging for years yet never looked at it as a possible source of income.
With Abe Olandres celebrating his first full year as a fulltime problogger, I realized that blogging, the new media, could be a great alternative career for Filipinos. Writing in English is not a problem. You don’t have to be tech-savvy to blog. You can do it from home, or from the internet cafe on the street corner.
Here at b5media, there are several Filipino bloggers, at least one of them fulltime. The rest, I’m sure, are also enjoying the monetary rewards that problogging has brought them. The dollar-peso exchange rate certainly helps if you’re based in the Philippines.
There are challenges to blogging from the Philippines. Power outages. Internet use fees. People who don’t take your blogging job seriously. But, as illustrated by Gloria, who writes Cancer Commentary for b5, it can be done even in provinces that are far from Manila. What more if you have the resources right in your home, or next door?
Think about it. If you want to blog professionally, take a look around b5’s site for postings about vacancies and blogger calls. Maybe I’ll meet you in our forums one of these days.
