While the US celebrates July 4 as the American Independence Day, the Philippines marks this day as the Philippine-American Friendship Day, to commemorate the freedom of both American and Filipino forces from the Japanese occupation at the end of World War II.

I’ve heard rumors of this from my friends who warned me to be careful when traveling to the Philippines. I read it tonight from Girlie Linao at India eNews, and it is depressing.
In recent years, the Philippines has become a global source of organs such as kidneys. Illegal and/or unhealthy practices of organ harvesting is on the rise. Most donors come from the poor, who give up a kidney for a few thousand dollars of “gratuity package” and livelihood assistance. OK so it sounds funny like that, but I am sure it wasn’t any fun for jetBlue passenger Gokhan Mutlu when he was told to stay in the airplane bathroom for his flight from San Diego to New York. And it’s certainly not funny now for jetBlue if this suit goes to court.
