This was the event that changed the course of Philippine history.

Twenty-five years ago, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr. was murdered at the airport that now bears his name.

A new documentary of the events surrounding this national tragedy has been released. Beyond Conspiracy: 25 Years after the Aquino Assassination takes a look at the questions that have remained unanswered about Ninoy’s death.

He was our hope. He was the one who was to bring change. He did eventually catalyze radical change in the political landscape of the Philippines, but at great cost to himself. This is what happened the day he went home (warning! graphic images in this video):

The documentary was produced by the Foundation for Worldwide People Power (FWWPP). Its aim is simple: to “affirm the historical significance of the Aquino assassination to the youth, many of whom have very little knowledge of this tragedy and its profound impact on Philippine society”. It is also for “those who have grown indifferent, convinced that Ninoy died in vain.”

It has been 25 years, but Ninoy’s dreams for the Filipino people live on. Do not forget. Despite events that seem to have wiped out the hopes born out of Ninoy’s death, his sacrifice was not in vain.

Ninoy said that “the Filipino is worth dying for.” He didn’t have to return, because he knew what it could cost him. But he did, because he had great hopes and believed that we can achieve great good. We are the ones he died for. Our freedom is what he gained for us, though he did not taste it himself.

We have made a mess of many things in the country. But as long as there are those who will not forget the value that Ninoy has put on the Filipino, there is hope for change. Ninoy’s legacy lives on.

"I Am Ninoy"

I was too young to know who Ninoy Aquino was, but I clearly remember the day he got assassinated. I was in sixth grade then. I had never seen my parents visibly shaken until that day the news broke of Ninoy’s murder. Mind you, my parents had nothing to fear; they did nothing wrong, nor were they involved in any of the uprisings at any time. But there was a foreboding fear of instability of the political air of the country. They had lived through the 1973 martial law, where even ordinary citizens feared for their lives, so that thought was never far when Ninoy was assassinated on August 21, 1983.

The death of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., and the People Power three years later, shaped a deeper love of country inside me. Our freedom IS worth fighting for. Alas, that was twenty five years ago, and many things have been forgotten.

This campaign hopes to bring back the sense of heroism that Ninoy Aquino lived out. No, you’re not asked to die for our country (at least not yet). But we can all make an impact, whether big or small, to create positive change for the nation. We’re still worth it, you know.
