Qantas Jet Update

The Qantas 747 plane that made an emergency landing in Manila last Friday is being inspected to determine what caused the 9-foot hole on its fuselage.
Specialists from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau are on site to conduct an investigation. Officials from Boeing, including three engineers, and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board are also helping in the probe.
So far this is what officials have been saying about the cause of the incident:
* It is not terrorism-related.
* Rust and/or metal fatigue may have been a factor.

Qantas Jet with a Huge Hole Lands in Manila

Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport was the site of an emergency landing made by a Qantas 747 jet which had a gaping hole on its fuselage. The incident happened just a few hours ago today, July 25, 2008.
You can see how large the hole is in this photo of the plane already safe on the ground.  It was reported to be 9 feet in diameter! Shown is Qantas pilot Captain John Francis Bartels looking at the damage.
