Valentine’s Day, Pinoy Style

Love is certainly in the Philippines’ air. Filipinos usually make a big fuss about Valentine’s day like it’s a crime if you don’t celebrate it like the rest: with flowers, cakes, going to the movies, romantic dinner (or a hotel room reservation) and little red hearts hanging over your heads.

As if any normal day couldn’t be as sweet and romantic if one will really put their hearts into it.

For some reason (may it be commercial or cultural) getting mushy, extremely sweet and loving is tolerated on Valentine’s day.

Personally, I’ve always made it a point not to go out on the 14th of February. Even if I love the color red; on valentine’s week, I intentionally do not wear anything red.

It’s not only because I’ve always had nobody special to celebrate Valentine’s with, but because I hate it when people make so much fuss about any occasion.

Especially when flowers are twice as expensive and your favorite chocolate cake isn’t available unless you place an order in advance. Restaurants are unusually crowded and the traffic is just horrible than normal.

Speaking of movies, Valentine’s day wouldn’t be complete without a Filipino movie for everyone’s heart. This year it’s “I will always love you” starring one of the most beautiful couple on Philippine screen these days: Angel Locsin and Richard Gutierrez.

Well, whether science explains all the love hoopla or not, Happy Valentine’s Day to you all!
