Kemaro Island is not only known for its natural beauty, but also for the legends and history that surround it. The name “Kemaro” comes from the local language which means “dry.”

The island is so named because even though the Musi River overflows during the rainy season, Kemaro Island remains dry and not flooded.

One of the famous legends on Kemaro Island is the love story between the daughter of the King of Palembang, Siti Fatimah, and a prince from China named Tan Bun An. According to legend, after getting married, Tan Bun An wanted to give his wife a gift of gold.

However, while sailing on the Musi River, he threw some valuables into the water, hoping to get gold. Unfortunately, the gold sank with the ship.

In her grief, Siti Fatimah followed her husband and jumped into the river. Before she disappeared, she left a message that an island would appear at the location where the boat sank, now known as Kemaro Island.

On this island, there is a nine-story pagoda which is the main icon of Kemaro Island. This pagoda was built as a symbol of peace and friendship between Chinese and Palembang cultures.

Every year, during the celebration of Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh, Kemaro Island becomes the center of great celebration for the Chinese community, with various rituals and religious ceremonies.
